Standard Operating Procedure

Personnel using the Cavitron Ultrasonic Scaler must adhere to the following protocol whenever using this equipment. Operator must wear appropriate personal protective equipment when performing this procedure.

 

  1. Set Up
    • Hold handpiece sheath over sink or cuspidor (scaler tip removed).
    • Activate Cavitron foot control.
    • Flush scaler unit water line continuously for 1 minute.
    • Clean and disinfect the handpiece sheath, cable, and scaler unit with approved disinfectant (i.e. Birex or ProSpray.)
    • Insert sterilized scaler tip into the handpiece sheath.


  2. Break down
    • While wearing PPE, hold handpiece sheath over sink or cuspidor, activate foot control, and flush water line of ultrasonic scaler for 1 minute.
    • Remove contaminated scaler tip.
    • Hold handpiece sheath over sink or cuspidor, activate foot control and flush scaler water line for 1 minute.
    • Clean and disinfect the handpiece sheath, cable, and scaler unit with approved disinfectant.
