RADIOACTIVE WASTE PROGRAM

OVERVIEW

The Radioactive Waste Program services over a thousand laboratories at the University, HUP, Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia, Presbyterian, Wistar, New Bolton, and the Science Center. We collect according to the schedule on this web site. Laboratories wishing to have waste collection can request pickup by filling out the Routine RAM Waste Pickup Request Form on or before the Friday prior to their collection week.

Waste containing only short-lived isotopes is held on campus until decay is complete. It is then surveyed and the required records made to meet the applicable regulations before it is disposed as ordinary waste. Long-lived waste is packaged, and then manifests are completed according to regulations. The waste is then is shipped to a waste processor to reduce the volume, prior to disposal in a low-level radioactive waste site.

If you have any questions or comments concerning disposal of RAM waste, please call Ron Heller at 215.651.0550 or send email to ronaldch@ehrs.upenn.edu. The Radioactive Waste Program makes certain supplies available in the isotope distribution lab in Anatomy-Chemistry Room 421. See RAM Waste Packaging for details.
