Protocol Approvals
OVERVIEW
- Biological Agents
To comply with federal guidelines and regulations, the use of all biological agents, biological toxins or recombinant materials in laboratories must be registered with EHRS.
- Select Agents
Certain restricted biological agents and toxins have been designated as "select agents" by the federal government (USDHHS/CDC and USDA/APHIS). Possession, use and transfer of these restricted agents must be registered with EHRS and the appropriate federal authorities. EHRS is responsible for coordinating the federal registration process for all Penn investigators.
- Human Embryonic Stem Cells
To assure compliance with federal and state laws, and University of Pennsylvania policies, all research or possession of human embryonic stem cells (NIH or non-NIH approved lines) must be reviewed by the Office of Vice Provost for Research and the Office of General Counsel. These offices must be contacted before human embryonic stem cells are ordered, received or before any research or storage is begun.
