The Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspected the University of Pennsylvania's use of radioactive
material from December 9 through December 12, 2002. We will receive the official inspection
results in 30 days, but it is likely that the following two violations will be identified:
- Failure to monitor a labeled package upon receipt
- Improper disposal/loss of control of a package containing 1 mCi S-35
Please review the package receipt and opening procedures [pdf] with your staff
and post it in your lab. We will be inspecting your package receipt procedures during quarterly
audits, and asking lab staff to demonstrate their procedures.
