The Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspected the University of Pennsylvania's use of
radioactive material from December 9 through December 12, 2002. The official inspection
results identified two violations, both of which concerned the proper receipt of
packages containing radioactive materials:
- A researcher did not secure radioactive materials from unauthorized removal or access. Specifically, following receipt in the lab, a package containing 1 mCi of S-35 could not be located.
- A researcher routinely did not monitor labeled packages for radioactive contamination upon receipt.
Please review the package receipt and opening procedures [pdf] with your staff
and post it in your lab. We will be inspecting your package receipt procedures during quarterly
audits, and asking lab staff to demonstrate their procedures.
Please let me know if you have questions or need more information.
