Manual Handling

Manual handling is defined as any activity requiring a person to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, throw, move, restrain or hold any animate or inanimate object. Departments at Penn that involve significant manual handling include Facilities Services, Food Service, Housekeeping, Libraries, Mail Service, Nursing and ULAR. Those who perform manual handling tasks are at an increased risk of repetitive stress injuries.

The goal of this section is to provide information on safe manual handling techniques.
