Medical Surveillance
- Individuals operating Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3a lasers are exempt from medical surveillance.
- Class 3b and Class 4 laser operators are required to have a baseline eye examination prior to using the laser that covers:
- Ocular history
- Visual acuity
- Amsler grid test
- Color vision
- Incident personnel (individuals working in areas where there is potential for exposure to laser radiation from a Class 3b or Class 4 laser, but do not operate the laser) shall have a baseline eye examination for visual acuity.
- Baseline eye examinations are performed by the Ophthalmology Department located in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and are paid for by the University. (See Appendix 4 for scheduling instructions and the Laser Eye Exam Form.)
- An eye examination is recommended when an individual terminates his or her work in a laser laboratory.
