Medical Surveillance

  1. Individuals operating Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3a lasers are exempt from medical surveillance.
  2. Class 3b and Class 4 laser operators are required to have a baseline eye examination prior to using the laser that covers:
    • Ocular history
    • Visual acuity
    • Amsler grid test
    • Color vision
  3. Incident personnel (individuals working in areas where there is potential for exposure to laser radiation from a Class 3b or Class 4 laser, but do not operate the laser) shall have a baseline eye examination for visual acuity.
  4. Baseline eye examinations are performed by the Ophthalmology Department located in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and are paid for by the University. (See Appendix 4 for scheduling instructions and the Laser Eye Exam Form.)
  5. An eye examination is recommended when an individual terminates his or her work in a laser laboratory.
